The catch heard 'round the world

Yet another disappointing Cubs season...it was over long before the All-Star break. The only break that we'll remember is Derrek Lee's wrist, which was the point when it all ended for 2006. There's always next year, right? Of course...I've been telling myself that for 33 years now. My grandmother is flying around with the other angels right now, Cubs pennant in hand and a box of Cracker Jacks in the other, smiling down on me telling me it will get better someday. Someday is all we have as fans of the North side. Let's face it...the North side is the only side.

Thanks Steve Bartman. I still think Moises Alou had a legitimate shot at this ball. Then again, a statement like that can be translated as "I would have done anything, sell my soul, say 34632463 Hail Mary's, et cetera, for that ball to be caught"...

I love Lily Allen

Infectious. Beautiful. Vibrant. She could have the record of the summer. "LDN" & "Smile" are two of the most shimmering singles in recent memory. Plus, she's dead sexy.

I am in love with Lily Allen. Oh yes.

This weekend, we have a band playing with us from Allston, MA, called Protokoll. You can hear some stuff here. So yeah, we got this band travelling and we need to play them some dough. Again, support is needed and appreciated. Bring friends, bring yourself, be seen with the mighty and keen.

Doors at 9PM...come in and drink a couple before the band plays. There will be drink specials, we're just unsure of what they are right now. But, rest assured, we will have specials. The Webster is being cool and working with us to make your drinking experience a fantastic one. We'll have the new Futureheads album News & Tributes playing in the background (more info here. We'll have some Futureheads giveaways as well, including promos of the new album, some cd singles, and some 45's on black wax!

Band at 10PM...support independent music, support Protokoll. These guys are talented and you can move and sway to them just like if you were seeing The Cure or Depeche Mode. Yeah, they're that good. Make their first time in Hartford a special one.

Deejays at 11PM...after the boozing and live music, it's time to dance. Sara and I will be playing the beats that keep ya neat. Plus, we'll be giving away Nine Inch Nails/Bauhaus/TV On The Radio (coming 20 June to NE Dodge Music Center, formerly Meadows, yadda yadda) tickets to some lucky patrons, courtesy of WCCC. Also got some Belle & Sebastian, Serena-Maneesh, Peaches, and Mogwai promo cds to give away as well. You can come out of here a winner!!! So don't be a loser!

And, please, vote for Sara (Garage Flower) on the Hartford Advocate's Grand Band Slam poll. In the DJ category, naturally.

Desmond Dekker, 1941-2006

Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir, so that every mouth can be fed. Poor me, the Israelite. Aah. Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir, So that every mouth can be fed. Poor me, the Israelite. Aah. My wife and my kids, they are packed up and leave me. Darling, she said, I was yours to be seen. Poor me, the Israelite. Aah. Shirt them a-tear up, trousers are gone. I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde. Poor me, the Israelite. Aah. After a storm there must be a calm. They catch me in the farm. You sound the alarm. Poor me, the Israelite. Aah. Poor me, the Israelite. I wonder who I'm working for. Poor me, Israelite, I look a-down and out, sir.

Desmond Dekker was the first reggae star. Before Bob Marley hit it big, Desmond hit with "The Israelites", a top ten hit in both the US and UK. A true pioneer of modern music, finally, he and Leslie Kong can make riddim in heaven once more. God bless.

Ian Copeland, 1949-2006

From Billboard.com:

One of the most colorful careers in music came to a close today (May 24) as pioneering booking agent Ian Copeland died in Los Angeles of melanoma. He was 57.
The sons of a CIA agent, Copeland and his brothers were part of a "law enforcement" clan in the music business: Ian founded Frontier Booking International (F.B.I.), younger brother Stewart was the founder and drummer of the Police; and older brother Miles was the founder of International Records Syndicate (I.R.S.), a record label whose acts included R.E.M., the Go-Gos, Black Sabbath, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo and General Public. Older sister Lorraine (Lennie) is a writer and producer. "I was the luckiest kid brother in the world," Stewart Copeland tells Billboard.biz, which has more information on Ian Copeland's life and career.
